Three-way Stopcock

A three-way stopcock is a valve with three connected ports that directs, combines, or stops fluid flow within medical tubing and vascular access systems. Rotating its handle changes the alignment of an internal passage, opening selected connections while closing others, which allows clinicians to control infusion, withdrawal, and access to syringes without disconnecting the line. In medicine, three-way stopcocks support intravenous drug delivery, blood sampling, pressure monitoring, and fluid management. Correct positioning helps maintain a closed pathway, reduce unnecessary line manipulation, and improve control during procedures, although careful handling is essential to prevent air entry, contamination, or unintended medication delivery.

First, you'll use 95% ethanol to elute the dye with a weaker affinity for silica gel. Then, you'll flush the second dye from the column with water. To recover the purified dyes, you will collect each...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neil Branda — Simon Fraser University Degassing refers to the process by which dissolved gases are removed from a liquid. The presence of dissolved gases such as oxygen or carbon dioxide can impede chemical reactions that utilize sensitive reagents, interfere with spectroscopic measurements, or can induce unwanted bubble formation. A number of different techniques are available for degassing liquids; some of these include heating, ultrasonic agitation, chemical...
