Ventricular Activation Mapping

Ventricular activation mapping is an electrophysiological technique that charts how electrical impulses spread through the heart’s ventricles, helping clinicians understand normal conduction and locate abnormal sources of excitation. During the procedure, intracardiac electrodes record local electrical signals at multiple sites, and activation times are compared with a reference signal to reconstruct the sequence and direction of ventricular depolarization. In medicine, these maps support the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias by identifying regions that initiate or sustain abnormal rhythms, guiding catheter ablation, and informing pacing strategies. The technique also improves understanding of ventricular conduction patterns in structural and electrical heart disease.

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

Juxtacellular Recording and Staining for Precise Mapping of Neural Activity in an Awake Rat

(2015)This video demonstrates the method of juxtacellular recording and staining in a restrained, awake rat. The procedure involves recording signals from neurons and injecting dye to precisely localize the recording site. This technique allows accurate mapping of neural activity to the brain's anatomical structure.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...
