Vitreous Substitute

Vitreous substitutes are materials used to replace the eye’s vitreous body when disease, trauma, or surgery removes or disrupts this transparent gel, helping preserve ocular structure and vision. They work by filling the vitreous cavity and providing optical clarity, appropriate viscosity, and surface tension; gas bubbles can expand to create temporary retinal tamponade, while silicone oil provides longer-lasting support. In medicine, these substitutes are central to vitrectomy and the treatment of retinal detachment, macular holes, and other vitreoretinal disorders. Their performance influences retinal healing, intraocular pressure, inflammation, and the need for later removal or replacement.

2026

The Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body (FCVB) is an intraocular implant that encapsulates silicone oil within a flexible capsule to reduce silicone oil-related complications. This protocol describes the surgical implantation of the FCVB via scleral incision for the treatment of complex retinal detachment and ocular trauma.
