Aged Rat Model

An aged rat model is a laboratory research system that uses naturally aging rats to investigate biological changes associated with later life, including those relevant to brain function and disease. As rats age, cumulative changes in cellular signaling, synaptic function, and physiological regulation can alter neural circuits, behavior, cognition, and responses to experimental interventions, allowing researchers to compare age-related outcomes with those in younger animals under controlled conditions. In neuroscience, aged rat models support studies of neurodegeneration, cognitive decline, brain injury, and therapeutic efficacy while preserving interactions among multiple tissues and systems. They can strengthen translational research by revealing how age influences disease mechanisms and treatment responses.

Source: Andreatta, R. D. et. al., Subcutaneous Neurotrophin 4 Infusion Using Osmotic Pumps or Direct Muscular Injection Enhances Aging Rat Laryngeal Muscles. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates neurotrophin 4 (NTF4) infusion in an aged rat model to restore laryngeal muscle function affected by aging-related denervation and reduced neuromuscular junctions. NTF4 triggers nerve regeneration and promotes neuromuscular junction formation, highlighting its therapeutic potential for laryngeal...
