Electroencephalographic Signals

Electroencephalographic signals are electrical patterns recorded from the scalp that reflect coordinated brain activity, making them a valuable, noninvasive window into neural function. Electrodes detect voltage fluctuations produced mainly by synchronized postsynaptic currents in large populations of cortical neurons, and signal features such as frequency, amplitude, and timing vary with brain state and sensory or cognitive events. In neuroscience, researchers analyze these signals to study sleep, attention, perception, epilepsy, and neural communication, while clinicians use them to support diagnosis and monitoring. Their millisecond temporal resolution also supports brain-computer interfaces and investigations of how neural activity changes in health and disease.

Concurrent Electroencephalographic and Local Field Potential Recordings in an Anesthetized Rat

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for concurrent recordings of co-localized electroencephalography (EEG) and local field potentials (LFPs) in an anesthetized rat. The process involves preparing the rat and attaching stimulating electrodes to its whisker pads. An EEG spider electrode is placed on the rat's skull for surface EEG measurements. At the same time, a multi-channel microelectrode is inserted into a specific brain region through a burr hole in the skull to record neural activity...
