Food Pellet Counting

Food pellet counting is a behavioral measurement that quantifies how many food rewards an animal consumes, providing a simple index of feeding, appetite, and motivated behavior in neuroscience research. Investigators place a defined number of pellets in an animal’s test environment, then count the pellets remaining after a specified interval, accounting for scattered or uneaten food to estimate intake accurately. This approach supports studies of feeding circuits, learning and reward, energy balance, and the effects of neural manipulations or pharmacological treatments. Standardized pellet size, timing, and counting procedures improve comparisons across animals and experimental conditions.

Using a Hemacytometer to Count Cells

2023

Many biomedical experiments require manipulation of a known quantity of cells, in order to achieve accurate, reproducible, and statistically-relevant data. Therefore, learning how to count cells is a particularly essential technique for any successful biomedical scientist. The most common way to count cells is by using a hemacytometer - an instrument that bears two laser-etched grids, which aid in the enumeration of an aliquot cells under a simple light microscope. This data can then be used to...

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Genetic modification of foods has been a controversial issue due to debated concerns over health and environmental safety. This experiment demonstrates technical understanding of how food DNA is genetically identified, allowing for educated decision making about the safety and potential dangers of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food supplies. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to amplify food DNA...
