Head Width Measurement

Head width measurement is a morphometric method that quantifies the transverse size of the head, providing a standardized indicator of anatomical form in neuroscience research. Investigators typically position a specimen consistently, identify defined lateral landmarks, and measure the distance between them using a ruler, caliper, or calibrated image; repeated measurements improve reliability and reduce orientation-related variation. In developmental and comparative neuroscience, this metric helps characterize growth, detect morphological differences, and assess phenotypic effects associated with genetic, environmental, or experimental conditions. When interpreted alongside other anatomical and behavioral measures, head width can support analyses of neurodevelopment, disease models, and structural variation across individuals or groups.

Using Your Head: Measuring Infants' Rational Imitation of Actions

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville One of the main challenges of infancy is to learn how to achieve one’s goals in the world, whether they are to pick up a toy or to express desires to another person, and one of the most powerful tools in this learning process is imitation. However, imitation is not always as simple as copying other people’s actions; it is also necessary to realize that goals and intentions guide behavior. The world is a...

Here, we present a simplified open-source hardware and software setup for investigating mouse spatial learning using virtual reality (VR). This system displays a virtual linear track to a head-restrained mouse running on a wheel by utilizing a network of microcontrollers and a single-board computer running an easy-to-use Python graphical software package.

Muscles that Move the Head

2024

The muscles that move the head are a dynamic and complex group of structures that work together to facilitate a wide range of head movements, including rotation, flexion, extension, and lateral bending. The bilateral sternocleidomastoid, or SCM, and the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles are significant head flexors. The SCM muscles originate at the sternum and clavicle and attach to the mastoid process of the temporal bone. The SCM contracts bilaterally to bend the head forward, whereas...
