Somatic Axonal Compartments

Somatic axonal compartments are specialized regions that organize a neuron’s cell body and axon into distinct functional domains, allowing electrical signals, proteins, and organelles to be regulated locally. Their properties arise from differences in membrane composition, ion-channel distribution, cytoskeletal structures, and selective transport between the soma, axon initial segment, and axon. These compartments help determine where action potentials begin, how signals propagate, and how neurons maintain polarized architecture. Studying them supports research on synaptic integration, axonal transport, neuronal development, and disorders in which compartment boundaries or molecular trafficking become disrupted.

Tissue Regeneration with Somatic Stem Cells

2023

Somatic or adult stem cells, like embryonic stem cells, are capable of self-renewal but demonstrate a restricted differentiation potential. Nonetheless, these cells are crucial to homeostatic processes and play an important role in tissue repair. By studying and manipulating this cell population, scientist may be able to develop new regenerative therapies for injuries and diseases. This video first defines somatic stem cells, and then explores the role these cells play in tissue regeneration.

Compartment Models: Two-Compartment Model

2025

The two-compartment model divides the body into central and peripheral compartments to account for varying blood perfusion rates among organs and tissues, affecting drug distribution. The central compartment includes blood and highly perfused tissues with rapid drug distribution, while the peripheral compartment contains tissues with slower drug distribution. After a single IV bolus dose, the drug concentration is high in plasma and low in tissues. The drug distribution between compartments...
