Strain Comparison

Strain comparison is the systematic evaluation of differences among genetically distinct lines of an organism, helping researchers determine how genetic background influences biological traits and experimental outcomes. In neuroscience, investigators compare strains under standardized conditions by measuring behavior, neural activity, anatomy, physiology, or molecular markers, then relate observed variation to inherited differences and gene–environment interactions. This approach supports the selection and validation of animal models for studying brain function, neurological disease, and responses to treatments. It also improves experimental interpretation by revealing strain-dependent phenotypes, strengthening reproducibility, and identifying biological factors that may affect the translation of findings across models or to human research.

Source: Bennett, J. A., et al. Visual and Microscopic Evaluation of Streptomyces Developmental Mutants. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the cultivation and phenotypic comparison of wild-type and mutant Streptomyces coelicolor strains. It outlines procedures for minimizing spontaneous mutations, preventing cross-contamination, and promoting bacterial growth through proper plating techniques. Finally, the video highlights visual differences in colony morphology to illustrate the...

Measurement of Compressive Stress-Strain Response at Small-Strains

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Steels

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA The importance of materials to human development is clearly captured by the early classifications of world history into periods such as the Stone Age, Iron Age, and the Bronze Age. The introduction of the Siemens and Bessemer processes to produce steels in the mid-1800s is arguably the single most important development in launching the Industrial Revolution that transformed much of Europe and...

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

An infinite series composed of positive terms may either approach a finite value or increase without bound. Determining which outcome occurs is a central task in calculus, and comparison tests provide structured methods for making this determination. Rather than evaluating a series directly, these tests relate it to another series whose behavior is already known, allowing conclusions to be drawn through logical comparison. The direct comparison test applies to series with positive terms. If each...
