Acetylcholine Memory Impairment

Acetylcholine memory impairment refers to reduced memory performance associated with disrupted cholinergic signaling, important because acetylcholine supports attention and learning. Acetylcholine released from basal forebrain neurons modulates hippocampal and cortical circuits, influencing synaptic plasticity; reduced production, receptor blockade, or loss of cholinergic neurons can impair memory encoding and retrieval. In psychology and neuroscience, studying this relationship helps explain memory deficits in aging and Alzheimer’s disease and supports cognitive testing and research on cholinesterase inhibitors. These findings connect cellular mechanisms with observable behavior and guide research into preserving cognitive function.

Intracoronary acetylcholine testing has been established for the assessment of epicardial coronary spasm more than 30 years ago. Recently, the focus has shifted towards the microcirculation and it has been shown that microvascular spasm can be detected using ACH-testing. This article describes the ACH-test and its implementation in daily routine.

Here we present a protocol for a mouse-specific test of cognition that does not require swimming. This test can be used to successfully distinguish controlled cortical impact-induced traumatic brain injury mice from sham controls.

Restoring Memory Formation in a Memory-Deficient Mouse Model through Allosteric Modulation

Begin with a genetically modified (GM) mouse with disrupted downstream signaling of mGluR5, a neurotransmitter receptor. In the hippocampus of a regular mouse, mGluR5 regulates endocytosis of fast-acting excitatory receptors from existing synapses, weakening them.Internalized receptors are recycled to newly formed synapses, strengthening them for memory formation. In the GM mouse, impaired mGluR5 signaling reduces receptor redistribution, disrupting new memory formation.Expose the mouse to a...

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.
