Catatonia

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome marked by significant changes in movement, behavior, and responsiveness, making prompt recognition clinically important. It reflects disrupted motor initiation and behavioral regulation and may appear as stupor, mutism, posturing, negativism, repetitive movements, or episodes of intense agitation. Catatonia can occur with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, neurological conditions, medical illnesses, or medication effects, so assessment includes careful observation and evaluation for underlying causes. Treatment commonly involves benzodiazepines such as lorazepam, while electroconvulsive therapy may be used when symptoms are severe, persistent, or insufficiently responsive to initial treatment.
