Drawing Task

A drawing task is a structured psychological assessment in which participants produce or reproduce visual material to reveal aspects of cognition, perception, behavior, or motor control. Researchers standardize the instructions and recording conditions, then analyze features such as accuracy, spatial organization, omissions, sequence, completion time, and drawing strategy. These measures can help investigate visuospatial memory, attention, planning, executive function, and fine-motor coordination. Drawing tasks are used in cognitive and developmental research, psychological assessment, and studies of neurological or psychiatric conditions, providing a relatively direct way to examine how people transform internal representations into observable actions.

Motor Learning in Mirror Drawing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Colloquially, the terms learning and memory encompass a broad range of behaviors and mental systems, everything from learning to tie a shoe to mastering calculus (and a lot in between). Experimental psychologists have divided up learning mechanisms into groups that seem to have different properties, and that seem to rely on different brain systems. A major division is between declarative and non-declarative memory, roughly, the...

Metamaterials at terahertz frequencies offer unique opportunities, but are challenging to fabricate in bulk. We adapt the fabrication procedure for microstructured polymer optical fibers to inexpensively fabricate metamaterials potentially on an industrial scale. We produce polymethylmethacrylate fibers containing ~10 μm diameter indium wires separated by ~100 μm, which exhibit a terahertz plasmonic response.

Piaget's Conservation Task and the Influence of Task Demands

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Jean Piaget was a pioneer in the field of developmental psychology, and his theory of cognitive development is one of the most well-known psychological theories. At the heart of Piaget’s theory is the idea that children’s ways of thinking change over the course of childhood. Piaget provided evidence for these changes by comparing how children of different ages responded to questions and problems that he...

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Decision-making is an important component of human executive function, in which a choice about a course of action or cognition is made from many possibilities. Damage to the inferior parts of the frontal lobes can affect a person's ability to make good decisions. However, while decision-making deficits can have a large impact on one's life, these deficits can be difficult to quantify in the laboratory.

Drawing Free-body Diagrams: Rules

2023

The first step in describing and analyzing most phenomena in physics involves the careful drawing of a free-body diagram. Free-body diagrams are useful in analyzing forces acting on an object or system, and are employed extensively in the study and application of Newton's laws of motion. The steps to draw a free-body diagram are listed below: • Draw the object under consideration. If treating the object as a particle, represent the object as a point. Place this point at the origin of a...
