Stimulant Effects

Stimulant effects are the changes in arousal, attention, mood, and behavior produced when substances or experiences increase activity in the central nervous system, making them an important topic in psychology. Many stimulants enhance signaling by increasing the release or reducing the reuptake of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine, which can heighten alertness and energy while also affecting sleep, appetite, and emotional regulation. Studying these effects helps psychologists understand motivation, cognition, substance use, tolerance, dependence, and individual differences in response, with implications for behavioral research, clinical assessment, and the safe evaluation of stimulant-based interventions.

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) allows the modulation of cortical excitability in a frequency-specific fashion. Here we show a unique approach which combines online tACS with single pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in order to "probe" cortical excitability by means of Motor Evoked Potentials.

Auditory processing is the basis of speech and music-related processing. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been used successfully to study cognitive, sensory and motor systems but has rarely been applied to audition. Here we investigated TMS combined with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to understand the functional organization of auditory cortex.
