Transactional Stress Model

The Transactional Stress Model is a psychological framework that explains stress as a dynamic interaction between a person and the environment, rather than as an event alone. Stress develops through cognitive appraisal: primary appraisal evaluates whether a situation poses harm, threat, or challenge, while secondary appraisal assesses available resources and coping options; ongoing reappraisal can alter these judgments as circumstances change. The model helps explain why people respond differently to similar experiences and guides research on coping, resilience, and psychological well-being. It is applied in clinical, educational, occupational, and health psychology to identify stressors and support more effective coping strategies.
