Nickel Resin

Nickel resin is a chromatography material used to isolate proteins, especially recombinant proteins engineered with polyhistidine tags. In immobilized metal affinity chromatography, nickel ions are held by chelating groups on the resin and coordinate with histidine residues in the tagged protein; contaminants are removed during washing, and the target protein is released with imidazole or altered pH. This selective binding mechanism supports protein purification from cell lysates and other complex mixtures. Nickel resin is widely used in biochemistry to prepare proteins for structural studies, enzyme assays, antibody research, and other experiments requiring purified, functional biomolecules.

Source: Schaeffer, J. W., Chandler, et al. Detection of Viruses from Bioaerosols Using Anion Exchange Resin. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the detection of viruses from bioaerosols using an anion exchange resin. A liquid impinger containing the resin is used to capture viruses from the air. The resin is collected and treated with a virus lysis buffer containing carrier RNA. The lysate is transferred to a microcentrifuge tube for viral RNA isolation, followed by qRT-PCR to amplify...
