Optical Transmission

Optical transmission is the passage of light through a material or interface, a property that determines how efficiently optical signals and energy move through a system. As light travels, its transmission depends on wavelength, refractive index, absorption, reflection, and scattering within the medium; transparent materials preserve more of the incident signal, while tissue and other complex biological materials can attenuate or redirect it. In bioengineering, understanding optical transmission supports the design of fiber-optic devices, biosensors, microscopy systems, and imaging methods. Controlling transmission improves signal quality and helps researchers measure biological structures, chemical changes, and physiological processes with greater accuracy.

We demonstrate the transmission of multiple independent signals through a multimode fiber using wavefront shaping employing a single spatial light modulator. By modulating the wavefront for each signal individually, spatially separated foci are transmitted. Potential applications are multiplexed data transfer in communications engineering and endoscopic light delivery in biophotonics.

This work describes a nanoimprinting lithography method to fabricate high-quality sensing arrays that work on the principle of extraordinary optical transmission. The biosensor is low-cost, robust, easy to use, and can detect cardiac troponin I in serum at clinically relevant concentrations (99th percentile cutoff ∼10-400 pg/mL, depending on the assay).

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) is an emerging technology capable of imaging optical absorption contrasts in vivo with cellular resolution and sensitivity. Here, we provide a visualized instruction on the experimental protocols of OR-PAM, including system configuration, system alignment, typical in vivo experimental procedures, and functional imaging schemes.

Source: Lutz, D., et.al. Assessment of Ultrastructural Neuroplasticity Parameters After In Utero Transduction of the Developing Mouse Brain and Spinal Cord. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the preparation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of a brain section from a mouse pup. The protocol starts with osmium tetroxide-fixed tissue embedded in resin, followed by precise trimming to isolate the region of interest and ultramicrotomy to produce semithin and ultrathin...
