Porcine Gelatin

Porcine gelatin is a collagen-derived protein material produced by partially hydrolyzing collagen from pig skin, bones, or connective tissues, and it is widely used in bioengineering because it is processable and biologically compatible. When hydrated and cooled, its polypeptide chains associate into a thermoreversible, water-rich gel; warming disrupts these interactions and returns the material to a fluid state. This tunable behavior supports fabrication of hydrogels, porous scaffolds, microcarriers, and drug-delivery systems. In tissue engineering, porcine gelatin can provide cell-adhesive environments and be chemically modified or crosslinked to improve mechanical stability, making it useful for studying and repairing soft tissues.

We present a facile method to fabricate a biodegradable gelatin-based drug release platform that is magneto-thermally responsive. This was achieved by incorporating superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) within a spherical gelatin micro-network crosslinked by genipin, in conjunction with an alternating magnetic field application system.

This protocol provides a simple and efficient way to propagate human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) using only conditioned media derived from the human placenta in a gelatin-coated dish without additional exogenous supplementation or hPSC-specific synthetic substrata.

Purifying Capillaries From a Porcine Brain

2025

This video demonstrates the isolation of capillaries from fresh porcine brains. The process involves removing the meninges, isolating the grey matter from the brain tissue, homogenizing and filtering the grey matter to isolate the capillaries, and finally using enzymatic digestion to purify the capillaries further.
