Melanocyte Biology

Melanocyte biology examines the development, function, and regulation of melanocytes, specialized cells that produce the pigment melanin and influence skin, hair, and eye coloration. Within these cells, tyrosinase initiates melanin synthesis in specialized organelles called melanosomes, which mature and transfer pigment to neighboring keratinocytes; ultraviolet exposure can increase this activity through cellular signaling pathways. In bioengineering, melanocyte biology guides the construction of pigmented skin models, engineered tissues, and organoid systems that reproduce pigmentation and barrier functions. These platforms support research on pigmentation disorders, wound healing, photoprotection, drug safety, and therapies designed to restore or modify pigment production.
