Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is the practice of maintaining clean, healthy teeth, gums, and other oral tissues, making it an important part of biology and preventive health. It works by disrupting dental plaque, a microbial biofilm that forms on tooth surfaces and can metabolize sugars to produce acids and irritate gum tissue; brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, and limiting frequent sugar exposure help control these processes. Professional examinations and cleanings remove hardened deposits that home care cannot eliminate. Effective dental hygiene reduces the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease while supporting research into oral microbiology, host responses, and systemic links to health.
