Gas Phase Equilibrium

Gas phase equilibrium is the dynamic state in which gaseous reactants and products undergo opposing reactions at equal rates, producing constant concentrations or partial pressures over time. It occurs in a closed system when molecular collisions allow forward and reverse reactions to continue, while the equilibrium constant expressed with partial pressures, Kp, describes the composition established at a given temperature. Changes in pressure, volume, temperature, or reactant amount shift the equilibrium according to Le Chatelier’s principle. Understanding gas phase equilibrium helps chemists predict reaction yields, optimize industrial processes such as ammonia synthesis, and interpret atmospheric and combustion chemistry.

2013

The determination of the gas-phase acidities of cysteine-containing oligopeptides is described. The experiments are performed using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The relative acidities of the peptides are measured using collision-induced dissociation experiments, and the quantitative acidities are determined using the extended Cooks kinetic method.

Dynamic Equilibrium

2020

A reversible chemical reaction represents a chemical process that proceeds in both forward (left to right) and reverse (right to left) directions. When the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal, the concentrations of the reactant and product species remain constant over time and the system is at equilibrium. A special double arrow is used to emphasize the reversible nature of the reaction. The relative concentrations of reactants and products in equilibrium systems vary greatly;...

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...
