Mc-icpms Dating

MC-ICP-MS dating, or multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry dating, determines geological ages from the ratios of radiogenic and stable isotopes in minerals, rocks, and other materials. During analysis, a sample is converted into ions in an argon plasma, separated according to mass, and measured simultaneously by multiple detectors; correction for instrumental mass bias improves isotope-ratio accuracy. These measurements are combined with radioactive-decay relationships to calculate crystallization, formation, or geological event ages. MC-ICP-MS dating supports geochronology, Earth and planetary science, and studies of geological processes by providing precise constraints on the timing and evolution of natural materials.

Radioactive Decay and Radiometric Dating

2020

Radioactivity is a spontaneous disintegration of an unstable nuclide and is a random process, as all the nuclei in the sample do not decay simultaneously. The number of disintegrations per unit time is called the activity (A), which is directly proportional to the number of nuclei in the sample. The decay constant (λ) is an average probability of decay per nucleus in unit time. The SI unit for activity is the becquerel, which is one disintegration per second. Another unit of activity is the...

Isolation of Quartz Grains for Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Dating of Quaternary Sediments for Paleoenvironmental Research

2021

This protocol is for the isolation of quartz grains by size for luminescence dating of sediments. Outlined are physical cleansing and chemical digestions by soaking sequentially in H2O2, HCl, HF, and HCl again to isolate quartz grains. The quartz purity is quantified with microscopic assessment, Raman spectroscopy, and IR depletion ratio.

The dendrochronological analysis of a stringed instrument requires inspecting the top plate, measuring the tree ring widths, establishing the chronology of the instrument, and dating through determining the end date-the year of the formation of the most recent tree ring.

Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS): Interferences

2024

Inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) is a highly selective and sensitive technique for accurate elemental analysis. Though the analysis of ICP–MS mass spectra is comparatively straightforward, it is affected by spectroscopic and non-spectroscopic interferences. Spectroscopic interferences arise when the plasma contains ionic species with an m/z value the same as the analyte ion. Spectroscopic interference can be categorized as isobaric, polyatomic ions, and refractory oxide ion...

Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry (ICP–MS): Overview

2024

In inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS), an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torch is used as an atomizer and ionizer. Solid samples are dissolved and volatilized before being introduced into the high-temperature argon plasma, while solution samples are nebulized and passed through the high-temperature argon plasma. Plasma dissociates the analytes and ionizes their component atoms to form a mixture of positive ions and molecular species. The positive ions are then passed on to...
