Metallic Indicator Electrodes

Metallic indicator electrodes are conductive metal surfaces used in electrochemical measurements to respond to the composition or redox state of a solution, making them important tools in analytical chemistry. Their electrode potential develops as oxidation or reduction occurs at the metal–solution interface and varies with the activities of participating species, often according to the Nernst equation; some metals also form equilibria with ions of the same element. In potentiometry, these electrodes are paired with a reference electrode to measure potential without drawing substantial current, supporting redox titrations, ion-related measurements, and endpoint detection. Their response depends on electrode material, surface condition, and solution chemistry.

Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are called...
