Radical Decomposition

Radical decomposition is the breakdown of a chemical species through pathways involving radicals, highly reactive intermediates with unpaired electrons. It commonly begins when heat, light, or another stimulus causes homolytic bond cleavage, splitting a covalent bond so each fragment retains one electron; the resulting radicals can undergo propagation, hydrogen abstraction, recombination, or disproportionation. In chemistry, studying radical decomposition helps explain the behavior of organic peroxides, azo compounds, polymers, and atmospheric molecules. Controlling temperature, solvent, oxygen exposure, and radical concentration is important for designing polymerization reactions, evaluating chemical stability, and limiting unwanted degradation or combustion.

Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

2020

Synthesis and decomposition are two types of redox reactions. Synthesis means to make something, whereas decomposition means to break something. The reactions are accompanied by chemical and energy changes. Synthesis Reactions Synthesis reactions are also called combination reactions. It is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a complex substance. Synthesis reactions are generally represented as: A + B → AB or A + B → C. The formation of nitrogen dioxide is a synthesis...

Source: David C. Powers, Tamara M. Powers, Texas A&M In this video, we will carry out the photochemically initiated polymerization of styrene to generate polystyrene, which is an important commodity plastic. We will learn the fundamentals of photochemistry and use simple photochemistry to initiate radical polymerization reactions. Specifically, in this module we will examine the photochemistry of benzoyl peroxide and its role as a photo-initiator of styrene polymerization reactions. In the...

We present methods to evaluate how predation risk can alter the chemical quality of herbivore prey by inducing dietary changes to meet demands of heightened stress, and how the decomposition of carcasses from these stressed herbivores slows subsequent plant litter decomposition by soil microbes.

Radical Reactivity: Electrophilic Radicals

2023

Radicals adjacent to electron‐withdrawing groups are called electrophilic radicals. These radicals readily react with nucleophilic alkenes. For example, the malonate radical, in which the radical center is flanked by two electron‐withdrawing groups, reacts readily with butyl vinyl ether, which consists of an electron‐donating oxygen substituent. The reaction between electrophilic malonate radical and nucleophilic vinyl ether is favored because the radical has a low‐energy SOMO, which interacts...
