Thermo Gravimetric Analysis

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a thermal analysis technique that measures how a sample’s mass changes with temperature or time, providing insight into its composition and thermal stability. During a controlled heating program, an analytical balance continuously records mass while the sample undergoes processes such as moisture loss, decomposition, volatilization, or oxidation under a selected atmosphere. Chemists use TGA to determine moisture and solvent content, estimate inorganic and organic fractions, and identify temperature ranges associated with material degradation. The resulting mass-loss profile supports quality control, formulation development, and the characterization of polymers, pharmaceuticals, minerals, and other chemical materials.

We present a protocol to synthesize Janus microhydrogels composed entirely of the same base material, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), with a clearly compartmentalized structure base on the phase separation of a supersaturated NIPAAm monomer solution. The synthesized Janus microhydrogels show unique properties such as anisotropic thermo-responsiveness and organophilic/hydrophilic loading capability.
