Arterial Blood Gas Analysis

Arterial blood gas analysis is a clinical laboratory test that measures blood acidity, oxygenation, and ventilation, providing a rapid assessment of respiratory and metabolic status. A heparinized arterial sample is analyzed by electrodes that directly measure pH, partial pressure of oxygen (PaO₂), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO₂); bicarbonate and related values are calculated from these measurements. Clinicians use the results to identify acid–base disturbances, assess gas exchange, and guide treatment for conditions such as respiratory failure, shock, and severe metabolic illness. The analysis also helps monitor patients receiving oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation.

2012

Chronic catheterization of blood vessels in the rat is often required for administration of substances, obtain blood sample over a period of time or for direct conscious blood pressure measurements. Femoral arterial catheterization of the rat and corresponding measurements of blood pressure in the conscious animal will be demonstrated.

Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Assess Blood Flow in the Arteries of a Rat

2025

Source: Chiu, S., et al. Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Rat Common Carotid Artery. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to measure blood flow in the common carotid artery of a rat. After securing an anesthetized rat on the MRI bed and ensuring stable physiological parameters, the common carotid artery is scanned to capture images at defined intervals. Blood flow is then computed from these images to evaluate changes...

Gas Exchange and Transport

2019

Gas exchange, the intake of molecular oxygen (O2) from the environment and the outflow of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the environment, is necessary for cellular function. Gas exchange during respiration occurs largely via the movement of gas molecules along pressure gradients. Gas travels from areas of higher partial pressure to areas of lower partial pressure. In mammals, gas exchange occurs in the alveoli of the lungs, which are adjacent to capillaries and share a membrane with them. When the...

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...
