Retinal Vessels

Retinal vessels are the network of arteries, veins, arterioles, venules, and capillaries that supply the retina with oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste, making them essential for vision and indicators of systemic health. Their function depends on regulated blood flow through specialized microvascular beds and the blood-retina barrier, which controls exchange between circulating blood and neural tissue. In clinical practice, fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography angiography assess vessel structure and perfusion to detect diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive changes, retinal vein occlusion, and other vascular disorders. Because retinal microvascular changes can reflect broader cardiovascular and neurological disease, retinal vessel analysis supports diagnosis, monitoring, and risk assessment.

A low-cost, easy-to-use and powerful system is established to evaluate potential treatments that could ameliorate blood retinal barrier breach induced by histamine. Blood vessel leakage, Müller cell activation and the continuity of neuronal processes are utilized to assess the damage response and its reversal with a potential drug, lipoxin A4.
