Polarization-based Phase Shifting

Polarization-based phase shifting is an optical measurement technique that determines phase differences by encoding them in the polarization states of light, enabling precise analysis of wavefronts and surface features. It uses polarizers, wave plates, or polarization-sensitive components to create controlled phase offsets between orthogonal electric-field components; an analyzer then converts these changes into measurable intensity variations across sequential or simultaneous interferograms. Engineering applications include interferometric surface profiling, dimensional metrology, deformation measurement, and optical testing. By reducing reliance on mechanical motion and improving phase retrieval, the method supports fast, noncontact characterization of precision components and optical systems.

Phase-shift nanoemulsions (PSNE) can be vaporized using high intensity focused ultrasound to enhance localized heating and improve thermal ablation in tumors. In this report, the preparation of stable PSNE with a narrow size distribution is described. Furthermore, the impact of vaporized PSNE on ultrasound-mediated ablation is demonstrated in tissue-mimicking phantoms.

Group Polarization

2020

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition. The phenomenon of group polarization explains many actions taken by groups that would not...

Sound Waves and Doppler Shift

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...
