Semiconductor Wafer Inspection

Semiconductor wafer inspection is the systematic examination of silicon wafers to detect defects, contamination, and process variations that can reduce integrated-circuit yield and reliability. Automated systems scan wafer surfaces using optical imaging, laser scattering, or electron-beam methods, then compare measurements or images with reference patterns to locate particles, scratches, pattern defects, and dimensional irregularities. Inspection data helps engineers monitor lithography, deposition, etching, and cleaning steps, identify sources of process drift, and classify defects by size and type. By enabling early intervention and statistical process control, wafer inspection supports higher manufacturing efficiency, device performance, and production quality.

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Semiconductors are materials whose ability to conduct an electrical current depends strongly on their temperature and level of impurity. The most common type of semiconductor material is crystalline silicon. Most pure semiconductors are not outstanding conductors; to improve conductivity, a pure semiconductor is often combined or "doped" with an...

The optical, electrical, and structural properties of dislocations and of grain boundaries in semiconductor materials can be determined by experiments performed in a scanning electron microscope. Electron microscopy has been used to investigate cathodoluminescence, electron beam induced current, and diffraction of backscattered electrons.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Observation and inspection is fundamental to physical examination and begins at the first point of contact with a patient. While observation and inspection are often used interchangeably, observation is a general term that refers to the careful use of one's senses to gain information. Inspection is an act limited to what one can observe visually, and when referring to physical examination,...
