Surface Plasmon Excitation

Surface plasmon excitation is the process of coupling electromagnetic energy to collective oscillations of conduction electrons at a metal–dielectric interface. Because light normally lacks the momentum needed to drive these surface waves directly, engineering methods such as prism coupling, diffraction gratings, or waveguides match the light and plasmon wave vectors, producing an evanescent field and a sharp resonance. Changes in the surrounding dielectric environment shift this resonance, allowing engineers to monitor refractive-index variations at the interface. Surface plasmon excitation therefore supports label-free biosensors, chemical detection, optical spectroscopy, and nanophotonic devices, while guiding the design of sensitive interfaces and compact measurement platforms.

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)

2023

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is the underlying optical phenomenon behind label-free biosensors to evaluate the molecular affinity, kinetics, specificity, and concentration of biomolecules. In SPR, biomolecular interactions occur on a biosensor made of a thin layer of metal on a prism. Real-time interactions of biomolecules can be monitored by measuring the changes of light reflected off the underside of the metal. This video describes the basic concepts of SPR and how it is used to analyze...

This video demonstrates localized surface plasmon resonance imaging to detect protein secretions from a single cell. Using a microfluidic setup and a peptide-bound plasmonic nanostructure chip, changes in reflected light intensity at the resonance angle reveal interactions with secreted proteins from a single cell.

Surface Plasmon Resonance to Study Biomolecular Interactions Using a Sensor Chip

2025

This video describes the surface plasmon resonance, or SPR, technique for studying the interaction between two molecules using a sensor chip. The change in resonance angle and the intensity of the reflected light are detected as a function of the association and dissociation of two molecules, and this provides information about the interactions between the two molecules.
