Automated Insect Sampling

Automated insect sampling is the use of instruments and programmed systems to collect, detect, or count insects with limited manual intervention, improving the consistency and scale of environmental observations. Depending on the design, automated traps combine attractants or passive collection with sensors, imaging, and digital recording to capture insect activity at defined locations or time intervals. These systems support biodiversity surveys, pest and disease-vector surveillance, and monitoring of changes in insect abundance or distribution. By producing repeatable observations over extended periods, automated insect sampling strengthens ecological research and can help identify environmental responses to habitat change, climate variation, or pollution.

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...

2015

Flight in insects is influenced by a number of factors and the propensity to disperse is an important variable in understanding insect ecology and biological control strategies. We describe the construction and use of a simple, relatively inexpensive, and flexible flight mill for measuring parameters of tethered flight in insects.

Oral and intra haemocolic infection of larvae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella is described. This insect can be used to study virulence factors of entomopathogenic as well as mammalian opportunistic bacteria. Rearing of the insects, methods of infection and examples of in vivo analysis are described.
