Redox Sensitive Elements

Redox-sensitive elements are chemical elements whose oxidation state, chemical form, and environmental behavior change in response to electron-transfer conditions. In soils, sediments, and natural waters, shifts in redox potential and pH, often driven by microbial metabolism and oxygen availability, can convert elements between more or less soluble, mobile, or reactive forms. These transformations influence the transport and bioavailability of elements such as iron, manganese, sulfur, arsenic, and chromium, affecting nutrient cycling, toxicity, and contaminant movement. Understanding redox-sensitive elements supports environmental monitoring, biogeochemical modeling, pollution assessment, and the design of remediation strategies.

Oxidation and Reduction Some chemical reactions can be classified as reduction-oxidation reactions, or redox reactions. Oxidation is the process of matter, like an atom or ionic molecule, losing one or more electrons, and reduction is the process of the matter gaining one or more electrons. Oxidation States Each atom in a molecule has its own oxidation state or oxidation number. The oxidation state describes how oxidized a molecule is relative to its free elemental form. The oxidation state is...

Oxidation-reduction or redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons from one molecule or atom to another. When an atom gains an electron, another atom must lose an electron, meaning oxidation and reduction must occur together. Since the redox occurs in pairs, the atom that gets oxidized is also called the reducing agent or reductant, and the atom that is reduced is also called the oxidizing agent or oxidant. A straightforward way to remember the definitions of oxidation and reduction is...

Electrochemistry is the science involved in the interconversion of electrical and chemical reactions. Such reactions are called reduction-oxidation, or redox reactions. These important reactions are defined by changes in oxidation states for one or more reactant elements and include a subset of reactions involving the transfer of electrons between reactant species. Electrochemistry as a field has evolved to yield sufficient insights on the fundamental principles of redox chemistry and multiple...

This paper presents a high-content microscopy workflow for simultaneous quantification of intracellular ROS levels, as well as mitochondrial membrane potential and morphology – jointly referred to as mitochondrial morphofunction – in living adherent cells using the cell-permeant fluorescent reporter molecules 5-(and-6)-chloromethyl-2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate, acetyl ester (CM-H2DCFDA) and tetramethylrhodamine methylester (TMRM).

Here, we describe a high-speed magnetic tweezer setup that performs nanomechanical measurements on force-sensitive biomolecules at the maximum rate of 1.2 kHz. We introduce its application to DNA hairpins and SNARE complexes as model systems, but it will be also applicable to other molecules involved in mechanobiological events.
