Blue Light Response

Blue light response is the set of biological changes triggered when organisms detect short-wavelength light, an environmental signal that influences behavior, growth, and daily rhythms. In plants, photoreceptors such as cryptochromes and phototropins absorb blue wavelengths through flavin-based chromophores, activating signaling pathways that regulate phototropism, stomatal opening, and development. In animals, blue light can also affect circadian timing by influencing light-sensitive cells that help synchronize the biological clock. Studying these responses supports research on plant productivity, artificial lighting, ecosystem interactions, and the environmental effects of changing natural and urban light conditions.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

2020

Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants. What Is a Photoreceptor? Plants respond to light using a unique set of light-sensitive proteins called photoreceptors. Photoreceptors contain photopigments, which consist of a protein component bound to a non-protein, light-absorbing pigment called...

We developed the Visual-Motor Response to quantitate the motor output of larval zebrafish in response to light increments and decrements. We also examined zebrafish vision mutants, including the no optokinetic response (nrc) mutants, which were thought to be completely blind when tested by another vision assay, the optokinetic reflex.

Investigation of a Blue Light LED Device to Suppress Wound Pathogens Using a Collagen-Based Synthetic Skin Model

A 405 nm blue light LED device demonstrates antimicrobial efficacy against a broad range of wound pathogens when evaluated on a collagen-based synthetic skin model. This simplified in vitro approach offers a reproducible and ethically viable alternative for early-phase evaluation of light-based antimicrobial therapies.

This method allows selective staining and quantification of DNA in gels by soaking the gel in a SYBR Green I/Nitro Blue Tetrazolium solution and then exposing it to sunlight or a blue light source. This produces a visible precipitate and requires almost no equipment, making it ideal for field use.
