Cross Dating

Cross dating is a chronological method that establishes the age of an environmental or historical record by matching its distinctive patterns with those in an independently dated record. In dendrochronology, researchers compare sequences of wide and narrow tree rings, produced by changing growth conditions, and align overlapping patterns to build a continuous timeline. This process can date wood samples, archaeological structures, and past disturbances even when individual specimens lack calendar dates. Cross dating also supports environmental reconstruction by linking ring-width variations to drought, temperature, fire, or other conditions, helping researchers examine long-term climate variability and ecosystem change.

Radioactive Decay and Radiometric Dating

Radioactivity is a spontaneous disintegration of an unstable nuclide and is a random process, as all the nuclei in the sample do not decay simultaneously. The number of disintegrations per unit time is called the activity (A), which is directly proportional to the number of nuclei in the sample. The decay constant (λ) is an average probability of decay per nucleus in unit time. The SI unit for activity is the becquerel, which is one disintegration per second. Another unit of activity is the...

Cross-Sectional Research

In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Isolation of Quartz Grains for Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Dating of Quaternary Sediments for Paleoenvironmental Research

2021

This protocol is for the isolation of quartz grains by size for luminescence dating of sediments. Outlined are physical cleansing and chemical digestions by soaking sequentially in H2O2, HCl, HF, and HCl again to isolate quartz grains. The quartz purity is quantified with microscopic assessment, Raman spectroscopy, and IR depletion ratio.

Dendrochronological Dating and Provenancing of String Instruments

The dendrochronological analysis of a stringed instrument requires inspecting the top plate, measuring the tree ring widths, establishing the chronology of the instrument, and dating through determining the end date-the year of the formation of the most recent tree ring.

Genetic Crosses

2023

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...
