Brain Tissue Necropsy

Brain tissue necropsy is the systematic postmortem examination and collection of brain tissue to identify structural abnormalities, disease-related changes, or effects of external exposures. The process involves documenting gross findings, dissecting defined brain regions, preserving samples, and using histology or other laboratory analyses to evaluate cellular injury and tissue pathology. In environmental research, brain necropsy helps assess how pollutants, toxins, habitat conditions, or other stressors affect nervous-system health in laboratory animals and wildlife. Findings can connect exposure patterns with biological outcomes, support ecological risk assessment, and guide investigations into neurotoxicity and environmental disease.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...
