Small Bee Pollinators

Small bee pollinators are bee species with relatively small bodies that transfer pollen between flowers, supporting plant reproduction and ecosystem health. As they visit blossoms for nectar and pollen, grains adhere to their body hairs and are deposited on the receptive parts of other flowers, enabling fertilization and seed formation. These bees contribute to pollination in natural habitats, gardens, farms, and other environments, often visiting flowers that larger pollinators may not use efficiently. Studying their diversity, behavior, and habitat requirements helps researchers assess ecosystem function, protect pollinator communities, and improve conservation strategies for plant and agricultural systems.

Pollination and Flower Structure

2020

Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs. Flowers must be pollinated to produce seeds. In angiosperms, pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of the stamen (the male structure) to the stigma of the carpel (the female structure). Flowers may be self-pollinated or cross-pollinated.

To reveal the pollinator effectiveness of a given plant species, multiple methods of field experiments have been developed. This study demonstrates the basic methods of field experiments for pollination ecology using the case study of Lycoris sanguinea var. sanguinea and the novel pollination mechanism, breaking-bud pollination.

Here are methods to quantify nutrients in pollen before and after its conversion to beebread by two subspecies of honeybees. We describe techniques to measure beebread consumption and resulting protein titers in both subspecies.

Dissection and Observation of Honey Bee Dorsal Vessel for Studies of Cardiac Function

The abdominal dorsal vessel of the honey bee and other insects serves as the functional equivalent of the mammalian heart and plays an important role in nutrient transport, waste removal, immune function, and more. Here we describe a protocol for the visualization and pharmacological manipulation of bee heart rate.

In honey bee workers, aging depends on social behaviors rather than on chronological age. Here we show how worker-types with very different aging patterns can be obtained and analyzed for cellular senescence.
