Cell Labeling Techniques

Cell labeling techniques are methods for marking cells or cellular components so researchers can identify, distinguish, and track them in complex biological samples. Labels may include fluorescent dyes, antibody-conjugated probes, or genetically encoded reporters that bind specific surface molecules, enter cells, or produce detectable signals for microscopy and flow cytometry. In immunology and infection research, these techniques help characterize immune-cell populations, monitor activation and migration, and visualize interactions between host cells and pathogens. Quantifying labeled cells over time can reveal infection dynamics, immune responses, and treatment effects, supporting diagnostics, vaccine development, and evaluation of antimicrobial or immunomodulatory therapies.

Bromodeoxyuridine Pulse Labelling Assay: A Technique to Measure Cell Proliferation

2023

The video describes the stepwise pulse labeling assay of mammalian cells with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) for measuring cell proliferation. The BrdU uptake permits the temporal tracking of cells that were in the synthesis phase at a specific point in time, without requiring the cells to be synchronized.

Inter-cellular communication is critical for controlling various physiological activities within and outside the cell. This paper describes a protocol for measuring the spatio-temporal nature of single cell secretions. To achieve this, a multidisciplinary approach is used which integrates label-free nanoplasmonic sensing with live cell imaging.

A Double-Labeling Immunofluorescence Technique to Visualize Host and Pathogen Proteins in an Infected Cell

2025

This video showcases double-labeling immunostaining with two different primary antibodies raised in the same species, binding specifically to parasite and host proteins. Furthermore, labeled secondary antibodies targeting these primary antibodies allow the distinct visualization of host and parasite proteins, facilitating the study of host-pathogen interaction.

Contactless dielectrophoresis (cDEP) achieves sorting and enrichment of particles via their intrinsic dielectric properties. Fluidic electrode channels replace metallic electrodes traditional to DEP, suiting cDEP to non-damaging sterile characterization and sorting of biological particles. We demonstrate how to prepare a cDEP microdevice and conduct cell characterization and sorting experiments.
