Serum Sample Collection

Serum sample collection is the standardized process of obtaining and preparing the liquid portion of blood that remains after clotting, providing a practical specimen for measuring antibodies, antigens, and other immune or infection-related biomarkers. During collection, blood is allowed to clot, then centrifuged to separate serum from cells and the clot before transfer into labeled tubes under appropriate storage conditions. In immunology and infection research, serum samples support serology, diagnostic testing, immune profiling, vaccine evaluation, and monitoring responses over time. Consistent handling helps preserve analyte stability and improves comparability across experiments and clinical studies.

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.
