Parking Garage Fees

Parking garage fees are charges assessed for using a parking facility, typically according to how long a vehicle remains parked and the facility’s pricing rules. In mathematics, these charges can be modeled with rates, fixed entry costs, piecewise functions, and inequalities that determine the total payment for a given parking duration. A model may apply one rate for an initial interval, another for additional time, or a maximum daily fee, requiring careful attention to units, rounding, and boundary conditions. Analyzing such schedules helps students translate real-world rules into equations, compare pricing plans, estimate costs, and evaluate how changes in time or rates affect the final fee.

Budding yeast is an advantageous model for studying microtubule dynamics in vivo due to its powerful genetics and the simplicity of its microtubule cytoskeleton. The following protocol describes how to transform and culture yeast cells, acquire confocal microscopy images, and quantitatively analyze microtubule dynamics in living yeast cells.

We provide a protocol to generate a pharmacological DYT/PARK-ATP1A3 dystonia mouse model via implantation of cannulas into basal ganglia and cerebellum connected to osmotic pumps. We describe the induction of dystonia-like movements via application of a motor challenge and the characterization of the phenotype via behavioral scoring systems.

Tension Test of Fiber-Reinforced Polymeric Materials

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Fiber-reinforced polymeric materials (FRP) are composite materials that are formed by longitudinal fibers embedded in a polymeric resin, thereby creating a polymer matrix with aligned fibers along one or more directions. In its simplest form, the fibers in FRP materials are aligned in an orderly, parallel fashion, thus imparting orthotropic material characteristics, meaning that the material...
