Avf Patency

AVF patency is the continued openness and functional blood flow of an arteriovenous fistula, a surgically created connection between an artery and vein commonly used for hemodialysis. It depends on adequate maturation and sustained flow through the access, while stenosis, thrombosis, infection, or repeated needle injury can restrict circulation and cause failure. Clinicians assess patency through physical examination, dialysis performance, and vascular imaging when dysfunction is suspected, enabling timely intervention. Preserving AVF patency reduces access-related complications, supports reliable dialysis delivery, and improves long-term vascular access outcomes for patients with kidney failure.

We present a protocol to efficiently evaluate aneurysm perfusion and vessel patency of sidewall aneurysm in rats and rabbits, using fluorescein-based fluorescence video angiography (FVA). With a positive predictive value of 92.6%, it is a simple but very effective and economical method with no special equipment required.

After puncturing the aorta through the inferior vena cava (IVC) to create an aorto-caval fistula in the mouse, solution containing a drug is infused into the IVC via the same needle, followed by incubation. This method enables more robust drug delivery to the venous endothelium compared to the external route.

We describe a method for creating a reliable model of cerebral venous hypertension in the adult mouse. This model has been widely described and tested in the rat. This new counterpart in the mice opens the possibility of using genetic modified animals and thereby broadens the applications of the model.
