Benign Esophageal Tumor

A benign esophageal tumor is a noncancerous growth arising within or around the esophagus, the muscular tube that transports food to the stomach. These tumors typically grow slowly, remain localized, and may develop from smooth muscle, connective tissue, or the mucosal lining; leiomyomas are the most common type. Small lesions may cause no symptoms, whereas larger growths can produce difficulty swallowing, chest discomfort, or food obstruction. Evaluation commonly combines upper endoscopy with imaging, while treatment depends on tumor size, location, symptoms, and diagnostic certainty, ranging from observation to endoscopic or surgical removal. Understanding these tumors supports accurate differentiation from esophageal cancer and guides appropriate care.

2013

Cooperation between an activated oncogene like RASV12 and mutations in cell polarity genes like scribbled, result in tumor growth in Drosophila where tumor cells also display invasive behaviors. Here a simple protocol for the induction and observation of the benign and invasive tumors is presented.

2023

This video describes an in vitro culture technique to generate human organotypic esophageal constructs by co-culturing primary human esophageal fibroblast and squamous epithelial cells within a decellularized porcine scaffold. These 3D culture models mimic the function and physiology of their in vivo tissue counterparts.
