Donor Lung Evaluation

Donor lung evaluation is the systematic assessment of lungs offered for transplantation to determine whether they are suitable and safe for a recipient. Clinicians integrate donor history, chest imaging, pulmonary function and oxygenation data with bronchoscopy, microbiology, and direct inspection of the airways and tissue. These complementary findings help identify edema, aspiration, infection, trauma, or impaired gas exchange while weighing organ quality against recipient urgency and compatibility. Careful evaluation supports transparent acceptance or decline decisions, guides perioperative planning, and can expand the usable donor pool without compromising transplant outcomes.

Here, we describe the necessary steps for establishing a rat EVLP model and show the inflammatory profile associated with the perfused lungs. The aim is to propagate knowledge and experiences about the rat EVLP model, enabling the integral understanding of the biological responses associated with that revolutionary technique.

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.
