Hepatic Artery

The hepatic artery is a major blood vessel that delivers oxygen-rich blood to the liver, supporting hepatocyte metabolism, bile production, and tissue maintenance. It typically arises from the celiac trunk and enters the liver through the porta hepatis, where it branches into right and left hepatic arteries that distribute blood through the organ. Together with the portal vein, it forms the liver’s dual blood supply, while hepatic veins drain blood into the inferior vena cava. Understanding hepatic artery anatomy and blood flow is essential in medicine for interpreting imaging, planning liver surgery or transplantation, and guiding treatments such as transarterial chemoembolization.

Targeting Liver Tumors with Oncolytic Viruses via the Hepatic Artery

2025

The video demonstrates locoregional delivery of oncolytic viruses through hepatic arterial injection as a therapeutic approach for hepatocellular carcinoma. These viruses selectively replicate in tumor cells, inducing cell lysis and releasing tumor cell-associated antigens. This process triggers immunogenic cell death, inducing an anti-tumor response.

Orthotopic liver transplantation in rats is an indispensable experimental model for biomedical research. Here we present our surgical procedures for orthotopic rat liver transplantation with hepatic arterial reconstruction using a 50% partial graft.

Heterotopic Auxiliary Rat Liver Transplantation With Flow-regulated Portal Vein Arterialization in Acute Hepatic Failure

Auxiliary liver transplantation provides a temporary support in acute hepatic failure, until regeneration of the failing liver. The heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation (HALT) with portal vein arterialization (PVA) renders sufficient liver function. We developed an analogous technique in the rat, to examine the influence of the portal vein arterialization on the morphology and function of the graft.
