Lung Preservation

Lung preservation encompasses methods used to maintain donor lungs in a viable, functional state between retrieval and transplantation. These methods limit ischemia-reperfusion injury by reducing cellular metabolism during cold storage and, in selected cases, circulating an oxygenated perfusion solution through the lungs ex vivo to assess function and provide controlled support. Preservation strategies help transplant teams extend transport times, evaluate organs that initially appear unsuitable, and improve donor-lung utilization. In medicine, advances such as normothermic ex vivo lung perfusion also support organ repair and individualized assessment, potentially expanding access to transplantation and improving recipient outcomes.
