Nerve Entrapment

Nerve entrapment is a disorder in which a peripheral nerve becomes compressed or constricted as it passes through a narrow anatomical space, disrupting normal sensation and movement. Pressure on the nerve can impair blood flow and nerve signaling, causing pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that may worsen with repetitive motion or sustained positioning. In medicine, clinicians evaluate nerve entrapment through symptom patterns, physical examination, and, when needed, electrodiagnostic studies or imaging. Treatment may involve activity modification, splinting, physical therapy, medication, or surgical decompression, depending on the location, severity, and persistence of symptoms.

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.

Source: Svientek, S. R., et al. Fabrication of the Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (C-RPNI) in the Adult Rat. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the surgical construction of a composite regenerative peripheral nerve interface (C-RPNI) in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury. The procedure involves attaching a transected peroneal nerve to a muscle graft and overlaying it with a dermal skin graft to promote nerve regeneration. Over time, motor and sensory neurons...
