Postmortem Eye Dissection

Postmortem eye dissection is the systematic examination of an eye after death to document its anatomy and identify disease, injury, or treatment-related changes. During the procedure, the globe and surrounding tissues are carefully removed or opened, oriented, and preserved before gross inspection and, when needed, sectioning for histopathology; these steps maintain relationships between ocular structures and suspected lesions. In medicine, the method supports forensic investigations, clarifies causes of visual loss, and contributes to research on conditions such as glaucoma, retinal degeneration, tumors, and trauma. Findings can also improve diagnostic criteria and inform clinical and surgical practice.
