Retrieval Augmented Generation

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is an artificial intelligence approach that combines information retrieval with language generation to produce responses grounded in external sources rather than relying only on a model’s stored knowledge. A RAG system converts a user’s question into a search query, retrieves relevant passages from a curated knowledge base such as clinical guidelines or biomedical literature, and supplies them to a language model as context for response generation. In medicine, this workflow can support evidence-based question answering, clinical decision support, medical education, and literature synthesis. By linking generated text to current reference material, RAG may improve traceability and reduce unsupported statements, although output quality depends on source selection, retrieval accuracy, and review by qualified professionals.

Retrieval

Retrieval is the process of getting information out of memory storage and back into conscious awareness. This ability is essential for daily tasks like brushing hair and teeth, driving to work, and performing job duties. Retrieval occurs in three ways: recall, recognition, and relearning. Recall involves accessing information without cues, such as during an essay test, where individuals must retrieve facts and concepts from memory unaided. Another example is remembering the name of a colleague...

Many important reactive minerals are formed during in situ groundwater remediation; however, conventional drill core-based methods often present challenges in collecting these minerals. This article offers techniques for utilizing the Min-Trap, an innovative passive sampling device, to effectively collect and measure reactive minerals from conventional monitoring wells.

ER Retrieval Pathway

2023

In the secretory pathway, vesicles transport proteins from one cellular compartment to another in forward transport to deliver the protein to its correct location. Occasionally, misfolded proteins and incorrect proteins escape their original compartments, and a retrieval pathway is used to return the escaped proteins to their original compartment. The ER uses many checkpoints to prevent the entry of incorrectly folded or a resident protein as cargo onto a transport vesicle. These mechanisms...
