Sheep Heart Model

A sheep heart model is an animal-based anatomical and physiological model used to represent selected features of human cardiac structure and function in medical education and research. Its four-chambered organization, valves, myocardium, and coronary vessels allow investigators to study pressure-driven blood flow, cardiac mechanics, and tissue responses, often using perfusion or ex vivo preparation. In medicine, the model supports surgical training, cardiovascular anatomy instruction, evaluation of implants and catheters, and development of procedures before clinical use. Because animal anatomy does not fully reproduce human disease, findings require careful interpretation, but the model can improve experimental control and procedural safety.

Establishment and Evaluation of a Sheep Model of Full-thickness Osteochondral Defect

2026

Here, we present an integrated protocol for generating controlled osteochondral lesions in sheep knees to establish an experimental model suitable for bone and cartilage tissue regeneration studies. The protocol outlines a method for inducing a full-thickness osteochondral defect in the femoral condyle, utilizing techniques that minimize animal welfare impacts and variability in results.

The Inverted Heart Model for Interstitial Transudate Collection from the Isolated Rat Heart

2017

This protocol describes a method to collect cardiac interstitial fluid from the isolated, perfused rat heart. To physically separate interstitial transudate from coronary venous effluent perfusate, the Langendorff perfused heart is inverted, and the transudate (interstitial fluid) formed on the cardiac surface is collected using a soft latex cap.

Most studies involving the Langendorff apparatus use small animal models due to the increased complexity of systems for larger mammals. We describe a Langendorff system for large animal models that allows for use across a range of species, including humans, and relatively easy data acquisition.
