Transcatheter Arterial Embolization

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that selectively blocks blood flow through an artery to control bleeding or reduce blood supply to abnormal tissue. Guided by angiographic imaging, an interventional radiologist advances a catheter through the vascular system and delivers embolic agents, such as particles, coils, or liquid materials, at a targeted vessel. TAE is used in medicine to treat traumatic and gastrointestinal hemorrhage, uterine fibroids, vascular malformations, and selected tumors, often offering a less invasive alternative to open surgery. Its precision can preserve surrounding tissue, reduce blood loss, and support organ-sparing treatment.

Combination of High Ligation and Intraoperative Embolization Using Polidocanol for Treatment of Varicoceles

2023

To reduce the postoperative recurrence rate of varicocelectomy, we combined high ligation of varicocele with intraoperative embolization. We injected polidocanol from the spermatic vein during surgery to embolize the branches of the spermatic vein and collateral veins. This is an alternative surgical method for the treatment of varicocele.

In this paper, we demonstrate a standard method for producing an embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion with homologous blood clots (fibrin-rich) in adult rat. This model closely mimics human ischemic stroke and is suitable for preclinical study of thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke.

Pulmonary Embolism I: Introduction

2025

Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a thrombus, fat or air embolus, amniotic fluid, or tumor tissue blocks one or more pulmonary arteries. These blockages originate in the venous system or the right side of the heart.EtiologyPE primarily arises from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other hypercoagulable states, such as inherited thrombophilias. Additional etiological factors include venous stasis, commonly seen in obesity, and endothelial injury from surgery and trauma. Less common causes include...
