Animal Model Establishment

Animal model establishment is the systematic process of creating or selecting animals that reproduce defined features of a human condition, enabling controlled study of disease mechanisms and treatment responses. In neuroscience, researchers choose an appropriate species and apply genetic, chemical, surgical, or environmental manipulations, then standardize housing and procedures to produce a reproducible phenotype. They validate the model by comparing molecular, cellular, anatomical, physiological, and behavioral readouts with the target disorder while assessing variability and animal welfare. Well-characterized models support research on neural circuits, neurodegeneration, injury, and psychiatric disease, helping evaluate hypotheses and potential interventions before clinical studies.
