Evoked Response Potential

An evoked response potential (ERP) is a time-locked change in electrical brain activity elicited by a sensory, motor, or cognitive stimulus, providing an objective measure of neural processing. In neuroscience, electrodes record scalp voltage while repeated stimuli are presented; averaging the aligned responses reduces unrelated background activity and reveals waveform components whose timing and amplitude reflect stages of information processing. Researchers use evoked response potentials to study sensory pathways, attention, perception, and brain disorders, while clinical and cognitive applications can help characterize impaired neural function and evaluate responses to interventions.

Recording of Electroretinogram and Visual Evoked Potential in a Rat

2025

This video demonstrates how to record electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked potential (VEP) in a conscious rat. The rat, with surgically implanted electrodes, is first dark-adapted. After applying dilating drops, the animal is placed in a restrainer and positioned in a Ganzfeld bowl. The ERG and VEP signals are then recorded.

This video demonstrates the process of measuring visual evoked potentials or VEPs in a dark-adapted, anesthetized rat with pre-implanted skull electrodes, which record the electrical signals from the brain's visual cortex in response to light stimuli.

Recording Electrically-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses in a Deafened Mouse

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to implant a cochlear device in a deafened mouse and apply electrical stimuli to record auditory brainstem responses. This procedure enables to understand the basic mechanisms of electrical hearing and can contribute to advancements in cochlear implant technology and auditory neuroscience.

2012

The preparation of acute brain slices from isolated hippocampi, as well as the simultaneous electrophysiological recordings of astrocytes and neurons in stratum radiatum during stimulation of schaffer collaterals is described. The pharmacological isolation of astroglial potassium and glutamate transporter currents is demonstrated.
